PRESS RELEASE                                              17TH NOV 2014

EUROPEAN  MOVEMENT GEARS UP FOR REFERENDUM

At a well attended meeting in Winchester the European Movement held its AGM outgoing Chairman David Gaunt explained how the local branch was gearing up in readiness for any Referendum that might be held on the question of Britain’s continuing membership of the EU.  He reported that as a result of the European elections in May membership is on the increase and the Branch is being expanded to cover the whole of Hampshire.

The Election hustings event held in the Guildhall had been very successful and attracted a good audience as well as BBC TV coverage.  It was pleasing to see that despite the rise in the UKIP vote recent opinion polls showed support for Britain remaining in the EU at a new high with a good majority in favour.

Local Councillor Robert Johnston was elected as the new Chairman and Cllr Roy Perry re-elected as the Vice-Chairman.  Robert Johnston told the meeting that the European Movement was the only grass-roots, cross-party organisation campaigning actively for Britain to remain in the EU and that he believed it was vitally important that members started to prepare now.  He said that the main focus of activity in the coming year would be education and information as much of the political commentary and media coverage was based on ignorance.

Most people had very little understanding of how the European Union works or how it had benefited Britain over the past 40 years of our membership. As an example he pointed to the report a few days before of the EU Auditors signing off the EU accounts and giving them a clean bill of health.  This had been falsely reported as not being the case. If Britain were to withdraw from the EU it would result in great economic damage to the country and a huge loss of influence in world affairs.

Over the coming year it is hoped the Branch will be able to organise a large number of events to reach out to lots of people. All those attending were asked to play a part by helping the new committee identify opportunities for speakers and information desks.
